BSA CHELSEA GOES UNDEFEATED, WINS FLIGHT

The BSA Chelsea U-13 boys team went undefeated this fall to win MNJYSA Flight 4, capping the season with a hard-fought 2-1 win over the St. John Vianney on Nov. 21. Head coach Dan Adams’ team finished league play with 9 wins and a tie to win the flight by 1 point over the Montgomery Knights (9-1-0).

Forwards Pablo Benegas, Anthony Sousa, and Stevie Tamayo and midfielders Daniel Voelker, Gen Kaneko, Angelo Padula, Paul Molander, Connor Stewart and Michael Styzcynski formed a balanced attack that led the flight with 33 goals. Nine different Chelsea players scored, with several having multiple-goal games.

Goalkeepers Siddharth Jain and Raffaele Cirianni combined with defenders Brandon Koskinen, Seth Gofayzen, Akhil Hegde, Ross Bernstein and Joey Porchetta to allow only 9 goals in league play. Chelsea’s +24 goal difference was also the flight’s best.

The team survived some close calls along the way. Down 2-0 at halftime at Glen Ridge Oct. 23, Chelsea scored 5 times in the second half to win 5-2.  The next day Siddharth, playing midfield, struck from 30 yards to break a scoreless tie with less than 2 minutes left.

And in the final game, Angelo raced back to clear a ball off the goal line to protect a 1-0 lead midway through the second half.  Daniel scored both goals in the game off feeds from Anthony and Pablo, capping a late-season scoring barrage after he missed several games with an injury in September and October.

After losing the first game of the BSA Kickoff Tournament to eventual champ Den of Lions, the only blemish on Chelsea’s record was a 5-0 State Cup loss to Bloomfield United, which went on to the Final 8 of the State Cup and won MNJYSA Flight 2.

Another season highlight was a friendly match vs. a New York Cosmos Academy team on a rooftop field at Pier 40 in Manhattan.

Coach Dan and assistant coaches Ron Koskinen and Onofrio Cirianni are proud of the boys’ hard work and dedication and look forward to more success in the spring season.
